Lima, known as the "City of the Kings" named by the Spanish Conquistadores, Lima is the main gateway into Peru. It was discovered in 1535 as Spain's South American capital.
Lima is a vast metropolis that’s situated on Peru’s desert coastline, a great place to start out your Peru travel adventure. Under the blanket of Garuua (mist), Lima’s atmosphere can seem almost dream like. Beneath this blanket of mist, Limas inhabitants shop at open marketplaces, partake in the recreations, enjoy food at local bars and also dine at one of the many fine restaurants that Lima has to offer.
At the center of Lima's town square sits La Catedral, which was constructed in 1555 and has beautiful wood carvings in the choir stalls. The altars are finely covered with silver. La Catedral is filled with ancient relics of the cities founder, Francisco Pizarro, and also is house to Lima’s original coat of arms. Most interesting is the coffin and remains of Pizarro found in the mosaic covered chapel adjacent to La Catedral.
An attraction that you would not want to miss is the Museo de Oro Del Peru during your tours of Lima. Two museums are architecturally combined to form an intellectually stunning array of art and ancient jewelry. The Gold museum has thousands of gold pieces sculptured into ear plugs, clothing and decorations. The Arms museum of Lima is on the top floor and is one of the worlds most astounding, with thousands of ancient firearms from all over the world. Museum tours are a great touch while visiting Peru.
